I’ve had a Flickr account for well over a year now. We all like Flickr and its “photosets” are rather spiffy – I originally started putting my photos into sets but soon discovered the limitation of 3 sets on the free account and deleted them. This was somewhat of an annoyance because I like to keep things organised and it’s good to be able to make a feature of the more interesting photos I’ve taken. Of course, buying a “pro” account would have sorted this for me… but I didn’t even consider it.
Last week I was chatting to Mark and he mentioned his friend had bought a Flickr pro account and it had only cost about £13 for a year. Bloody hell, I thought, that’s cheap… I ought to look at doing that myself. So lo and behold I now have a pro account – bravo, huzzah – but why did it need somebody to tell me how cheap it is before I “clicked” and bought it? This is the reason:

My brain does not subconsciously do currency conversions, so I just ignored the advert completely, even though I’ve seen it dozens of times. It would have been dead simple for Flickr to show me a localised advert in Sterling – they already have a “Country” field in the profile, which I filled in when I registered. There is a lesson to be learnt here: not all of your customers live in America, and they like to feel the love too.
